Difference between Falkenstein Pro and Falkenstein Light
Falkenstein Pro or Light – Which Reel Mower Is Right for Your Lawn?
The Falkenstein Pro and Falkenstein Light are built around the same high-quality reel mowing philosophy and both are designed to deliver a clean, precise cut.
The main difference is not basic cut quality. It is the height of cut the entire mower has been engineered to maintain reliably.
The Falkenstein Light combines our premium cutting system with a lighter and simpler machine design. The Falkenstein Pro adds several engineering features specifically intended to maintain consistent mower geometry and tracking at very low heights of cut.
The Simple Decision
Do you normally mow at approximately 0.6 inches (15 mm) or higher?
The Falkenstein Light will usually be the right choice. It provides the high-quality Falkenstein cutting system, Tournament Cut bedknife and excellent cut quality without requiring the additional engineering that becomes important at ultra-low HOC.
Do you want to mow consistently below approximately 0.6 inches (15 mm)?
We recommend the Falkenstein Pro. The lower the HOC, the more even small differences in mower tracking, weight distribution and roller contact can affect the result. The Pro was engineered specifically for this demanding range.
Is your lawn significantly larger than 3,200 sq ft (300 m²)?
Both Falkenstein models are manual reel mowers. Larger areas can certainly be mowed, but beyond approximately 3,200 sq ft, manual mowing can become increasingly time-consuming and physically demanding. Lawn size should therefore be part of the buying decision.
What Both Falkenstein Models Have in Common
“Light” does not mean a basic cutting system.
Both models are designed around the same goal: delivering the clean, precise scissor-like cut expected from a premium reel mower.
- high-quality reel cutting system
- Tournament Cut bedknife
- clean and precise reel-mower cut
- high-quality, durable bearings
- robust mechanical construction
- serviceable long-term design
- manufactured and assembled in Germany
The Falkenstein Pro is therefore not simply a “better” mower because it costs more. It requires more engineering because ultra-low mowing places much greater demands on the entire machine.
Falkenstein Light – Premium Cut Quality for Everyday HOC
The Falkenstein Light is designed for lawns typically maintained at approximately 0.6 inches (15 mm) and above.
At these mowing heights, the additional ultra-low-HOC engineering of the Pro is normally unnecessary. This allows the Light to use a lighter and simpler overall construction without compromising the quality of its core cutting system.
At the heart of the Light is a high-quality reel cutting system with our Tournament Cut bedknife, providing the precise and clean cut expected from a Falkenstein.
Electropolished Stainless-Steel Rear Roller
The Falkenstein Light now comes standard with a high-quality electropolished stainless-steel rear roller.
It is corrosion-resistant, extremely low-maintenance and supported by robust bearings. Electropolishing creates an exceptionally smooth and refined stainless-steel surface.
Front Roller
The standard Falkenstein Light uses a robust galvanized steel front roller.
Customers who want to further improve mower tracking can upgrade the Light with the profiled front roller used on the Falkenstein Pro.
Why Is the Light Lighter?
At mowing heights of approximately 0.6 inches and above, small differences in lateral weight distribution or roller tracking have considerably less influence on the finished cut.
The Light therefore does not require features such as the additional lateral weight balancing used on the Pro. This allows the mower to be lighter, simpler and more economical.
Within its intended HOC range, that is an advantage rather than a compromise.
Falkenstein Pro – Engineered for Ultra-Low HOC
The Falkenstein Pro was engineered specifically to maintain consistent mower geometry and precise tracking at very low heights of cut.
Below approximately 0.6 inches (15 mm), small mechanical differences become increasingly important. Slight changes in mower angle, buildup on a roller or uneven weight distribution can affect the effective height of cut when the turf is maintained only a few millimeters above the soil.
For this reason, the Pro incorporates additional engineering features that are simply not necessary for the Light within its intended mowing range.
Rigid 5 mm Steel Chassis
The Falkenstein Pro uses an exceptionally rigid 0.2-inch (5 mm) steel chassis to maintain consistent machine geometry under load.
This rigidity becomes increasingly important at very low HOC, where even small changes in the relationship between the reel, rollers and turf can influence the finished result.
Laterally Balanced Construction
The drivetrain is naturally located on one side of the mower and therefore adds additional weight to that side.
On the Falkenstein Pro, this imbalance is compensated for by the machine's construction. The goal is to maintain even contact with the turf across the full width of the mower – particularly important when mowing at ultra-low HOC.
Rounded Rear Roller
The Falkenstein Pro rear roller is specifically designed for very low mowing heights.
Its rounded geometry helps reduce unnecessary stress or damage to closely cut turf during turns and when crossing small surface irregularities.
Roller Scrapers
At very low HOC, the rollers need to maintain consistent contact with the turf.
The Falkenstein Pro therefore includes roller scrapers as standard equipment. They help prevent soil, damp clippings and other material from accumulating on the rollers and changing their effective diameter.
Even a small buildup can slightly raise or tilt the mower – a difference that may become visible when mowing at very low heights.
Profiled Front Roller
The Falkenstein Pro comes standard with a high-quality profiled front roller.
It supports controlled, consistent tracking and is specifically designed for the demands of precise low-HOC mowing.
Pro or Light? Our Recommendation
| Desired Height of Cut | Recommended Model |
| Approx. 0.6" (15 mm) and above | Falkenstein Light |
| Consistently below approx. 0.6" (15 mm) | Falkenstein Pro |
Choose the Falkenstein Light if you want premium reel-mower cut quality at more conventional mowing heights and value lower weight, easier handling and a more economical machine.
Choose the Falkenstein Pro if you want to maintain turf at very low HOC and need a mower whose entire construction has been engineered for maximum consistency and precision in that range.
In short: both models can deliver an exceptional cut. Your desired HOC and actual mowing requirements determine which Falkenstein is right for you.
